Looks
If you could judge a book by its cover, you'd take Arien as an elegant, cheerful, and proper young lady. Her long, dark curls tumble freely over her shoulders and down her back, framing her ovalline face perfectly, and her complexion is smooth and pure, simple and beautiful. Her cheekbones are prominent and thin, so she looks surprisingly more mature than her age would normally be. She is pretty thin for someone of her age, but she is also a tough girl. She has toned muscles underneath her fair appearance, and can deliver quite a punch if the need calls. If there's one thing you should know about Arien, it's that appearances can be deceiving; so watch out!
Style of Clothing
Arien is an artist by nature, and her creative ingenuity is carried over into all things she does, wears, or owns - and her wardrobe is no exception. She loves to wear fashionable outfits, but also enjoys the lazy days consisting of a simple pony-tail and sweats and t-shirt. However, Arien will take any excuse to get all glammed up; so when she goes out, she will typically put a great deal of thought into what she wears. She hates conformity, so she may don clothes that others may find different or striking - her number one fashion rule, is to dress how you want to dress. Her clothes, then, usually consist of bright colors, contrasting pieces, daring/edgy outfits, heavily glamorous accessories, and anything else she finds especially cute or poignant.
Body Mods and other Distinct Features– Piercings, Tattoos and Scars
Arien has a total of seven tattoos currently. Her first tattoo is a nightingale on her hip, signifying her love of music. (There's a background story to it, but for brevity's sake, I shall spare any further explanation.) Second, a winged ankh symbol she designed is tattooed on her shoulder, a symbol of her belief in the value of life (and commemorating her love of Ancient Egyptian culture). Next, the symbol for J. R. R. Tolkien upon her neck, as her parents loved the Lord of the Rings books, and named her after the series. Corresponding to this is another tattoo on her wrist, a quote that reads "Love is eternal" in Elvish script (also known as Tengwar). Her next two tattoos are two parts of a verse from Psalm 91, reading "You shall not fear the terror of night" and "Nor the arrow that flies by day" on both of her inner arms - when she was baptized, her parents dedicated Psalm 91 as a prophecy to her. And last but not least, she has a music note/treble clef design she created tattooed on her ankle, another (more general) representation of the importance of music in her life.
The only piercings Arien has are her ears, two in each; however, she has quite an array of scars from over the years. She has a small, almost undetectable scar on her forehead from falling down three flights of stairs as a child, all of which had no carpet; this resulted in giving her a nasty gash from the exposed nails driven through the steps. She also has a scar on her left hip and on her ankle from sliding across a rock face while climbing a mountain.

Personality
Arien is the epitome of exuberance. She has a constant supply of energy, and even in the most serious, dire, or tedious situations, she always manages to wear a smile, put her best foot forward, and find a solution to whatever problem may face her. She is unconditionally loving, generous, and heartfelt to all those who meet her; but betray her trust, and it won't be easy to regain it. She is very capable of making friends, and even better at keeping them. However, she is a very black-and-white, focused, and honest person, so she is not afraid to speak her mind.

Background:
Arien was born amidst chaos. The world was in an uproar, shaken by the terrors of nuclear power and desperately trying to regain its strength. But it would never come - not in that day and age, anyhow.
In a small Welsh town set comfortably amongst the steep hills near the River Gavenny, Arien's family dwelled in the shadow of war. The young girl spent the first few years of her life living thriftily with her parents and two siblings, enjoying the little they had with all the joyfulness they could muster. But the war took a turn for the worse, and Abergavenny was sent up in flames. Fleeing the chaos and destruction, the family made their way to London, in hopes of finding some way out of Europe, and away from danger. They intended to find a subtle, uninvolved region where they could dwell in peace. While their parents searched for a way out, Arien and her brother and sister stayed in the home of a family friend.
But life does not always have a happy ending; likewise, Arien's tale has no happy beginnings either.
A bomb landed in London, just a short time after the family had arrived there. Arien found herself pinned under what used to be the roof of the house; her leg had been broken, and she had suffered a concussion. It took three hours for rescue teams to find her, but they were unable to locate Arien's siblings. The girl's memory had been completely wiped after the incident, and so she could not recall where they had been at the time of the bombing. She was taken to a nearby hospital, and watched over carefully by the nurses while they tried to contact her parents. Finally, after struggling through many dead lines and wrong numbers, Arien was able to blurt out the number of her father's cell phone. The hospital made contact with her dad, and the nurse allowed Arien to speak on the phone.
Her father told her that they were near Sutton, investigating a possible privately-owned airplane company that provided transportation to safer areas for those wishing to escape the ensuing war. He said that he would find out the details as soon as possible and be back to get her and her siblings in just a short while - but before Arien could tell him the truth of her siblings, there was a great noise in the background, and her father began to speak hurriedly.
"Arien, you must promise me to look after yourself. Take care of your siblings - they need you just as much as you need them. I know you're a strong girl, and you'll be just fine, but I want you to know just how much your mummy and I love you - "
The girl was worried, sensing something amiss. "What's wrong, Dad? Where's mummy?"
The voice of her mother came gently, waveringly through the phone. "Sweet Arien, I'm right here. Everything's alright, I'm just fine."
"So please," her father spoke again, "Please watch over yourself, Arien. We love you - so much, you will never know."
The tears began to well in her eyes. "But Daddy, I need you here! I don't know what to do, Brenn and Chryssa -"
"It's okay, my dear. You will manage, don't you fret. Keep your head and you'll get out of this perfectly fine. Now tell your brother and sister I love them, and we'll see you in a few -"
A huge explosion of sound ricocheted through the receiver, and the line went dead.- - - - - -
It's been 18 long years since her parents' alleged death and siblings' disappearance - a period of time through which Arien was forced to struggle every day. The grief has accompanied her through some of the most vital stages of her life, but she has grown up regardless of the obstacles that constantly seek to hinder her. The memory of her family keeps her going when others may falter and give up the fight; and it was because of this that she found herself living in Shangrila.
After the incident, Arien lived in a foster home in Windsor, a short ways from the outer skirts of London. Upon her 16th birthday, she was given the choice to leave and find her own living arrangements; and she took the opportunity to leave England altogether. She took her few belongings and hitchhiked her way to a docking company outside of Bristol, hoping to find some way to persuade someone to take her away. Luck was with her that day, and so before she knew it, Arien was being taken aboard a ship as a stowaway by a compassionate crewman, who told her they were setting a course for Australia. She had never traveled before, and knew little of the continent she was now to live in, but she was determined to create a new life for herself. The journey was long, but it felt wonderful to be getting away from the constant shrieks of distant bombs, and to feel the cool breeze of the ocean on her face.
Before she knew it, however, Arien found herself on the country of Australia. She came to Shangrila as a poor, famished girl with nothing but passion in her heart; but a challenge never daunted her, and so she set out on foot to see what fate had in store for her. Through hard work and persistence, she managed to secure a living doing odd jobs around the Hesperian district in exchange for money, shelter, or food. For a long while, she was forced to meander homeless about the city, so pitifully similar to an abandoned puppy. It took a lot of work, but she finally managed to create her own business, and moved progressively up in life. Though wealth was never her intention, she could now afford to live comfortably on her own, with horses as her only companions. Her graphic design/artistic services have certainly held a decent amount of acclaim among those in Avalon, and she has great potential for huge success in the future. But for now, she is content with living the more 'modest' life - grateful for all she has, she thinks of her family every day, longing to find their whereabouts and to see them all once more.
